So here’s exactly what Karl Lagerfeld said about Adele, and the backpedal soon afterwards.

First, as guest editor of Metro World News, on the subject of Lana Del Ray:

I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She’s not alone with implants.

Then, responding to international criticism in the same publication:

I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published. I actually prefer Adele, she is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.

So to summarise:

  • Adele is a better singer than Lana Del Ray, and is beautiful but fat.
  • Lana Del Ray might have implants.
  • Humblebrag about his own weight loss.
  • Adele is definitely beautiful.

We all clear? None of this should be surprising to anyone. Karl Lagerfeld is the weirdest man alive.

You know how in Men in Black when a poorly concealed alien would rip off their unconvincing human face and it would be obvious that they’d been an alien all along? And everyone would be like “Oooooh. Of course!

I really think we should be preparing for one of those announcements from the Lagerfeld camp any day now.

My favourite corner of Adele’s 21

The 21 album is a fairly comprehensive catalogue of everything that happens in a person’s mind when their relationship ends, and it’s nearly impossible not to relate to a part of it. This obviously comes once you’ve put yourself back together after her shattering talent blows you away.

Everyone’s had lots of breakups, and they all mean something, but I think the part that moves me the most is what she sings about in Don’t You Remember.

I do relate to the part about him leaving “without a word“, because that is a common curse for fearless women who love fearful men, as she seems to have done – when they go, the actual act of it can be cowardly.

But what strikes me more than that is what she says about the feeling of not knowing that everything is broken.

I had no idea of the state we were in

I think that means that as far as she knew, everything was the same, which is tragic because that means things were broken for a long time and she had grown comfortable in her unhappiness.

But it’s the rationalist that comes out, picking at the maths of that love in its fallout – it was wonderful once for a very specific reason, and that reason hasn’t changed, so shouldn’t it still… be wonderful?

But, as we know, that’s not how these things work.

I know I have a fickle heart, and bitterness
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head

But baby please remember, you used to love me.
